Last season’s cup winner Sorrento are still on course to defend their title after a 2-0 win against local rivals ECU Joondalup at Percy Doyle Reserve. Both sides had chances with Stuart Montgomery being denied by Joondalup keeper Andy Banks early and Joondalup’s David Foster and Matty Italiano saw their chances flash wide of the target. Former Perth Glory striker Tommy Amphlett had the chance to give Joondalup the lead when they were awarded a penalty on the hour, but Sorrento keeper Curtis Aspden saved his spot kick. The decisive goal came nine minutes from time. A brilliant cross from James Morgan found skipper Todd Harnwell who calmly slotted home. Then seven minutes later Sorrento doubled their lead through a Ryan Pearson clinical finish, and the Gulls were home.
Division One side Wanneroo City has moved into the next round after securing another Premier League scalp, this time knocking out Stirling Lions 3-1 at the Kingsway Reserve. They had to do it the hard way coming from a goal down, Phil O’Callaghan giving the visitors the lead on 23 minutes but Brian Cairney levelled 11 minutes later. After the break Jason Marsden put The Roos in front just after the hour, and the Lions lost defender Michael Pugliese on 75 minutes, after receiving a second yellow card, and Marsden rubbed salt into the wounds of the Lions scoring a third in stoppage-time.
Floreat Athena moved into the next round with a hard fought 3-2 win against Division One side Rockingham City at Lark Hill. The home side took a surprise lead after only ten minutes, with former Floreat striker Rafael Insaurralde scoring, but the visitors hit back on the stroke of half time through Jarrad Smith. Vincent Sweeney gave Floreat the lead two minutes into the second half, and the game looked safe when second half substitute David Heagney scored with nine minutes remaining. Papa Kpatar scored for City with four minutes later to set up a tense finish but Floreat hung on to go into the quarter-finals
Perth Soccer Club progressed into the next round with a strong 4-1 win against fellow Premier League side Western Knights at Dorrien Gardens. Former Perth Glory midfielder Antonio Naglieri free kick found the head of defender Trent Kay who headed home. It was 2-0 on the half hour Josh Wilkins crossed to David Onoforo who fired home at the near post. After the break Robert Sciascia added a third on 55 minutes and three minutes later Onoforo added his second to make it 4-0. The Knights scored a consolation goal in stoppage time, David Caine firing home from long-range.
In other games Premier League side Armadale were dumped out of the cup by Division Two side Melville City, Balcatta beat Division One side Shamrock Rovers 5-1 at Grindleford Reserve. John Thornley and Callum Roberts scored two each, Daniel Micevski added the other, while Alan O’Mahoney scored for Shamrock. while Sunday amateur league side Hamersley Rovers overcame fellow amateur side Kingsley 5-3 after extra time.
